Sports Medicine Team Roles

Athletic Trainer (ATC)
“Certified athletic trainers are health care professionals who specialize in preventing, recognizing, managing and rehabilitating injuries that result from physical activity.  As part of a complete health care team, the certified athletic trainer works under the direction of a licensed physician and in cooperation with other health care professionals, athletics administrators, coaches and parents.” – www.nata.org

  • www.vata.us – The Virginia Athletic Trainer’s Association

Physical Therapist (PT)
Physical therapists are health care professionals who diagnose and treat individuals of all ages, from newborns to the very oldest, who have medical problems or other health-related conditions that limit their abilities to move and perform functional activities in their daily lives.

PTs examine each individual and develop a plan using treatment techniques to promote the ability to move, reduce pain, restore function, and prevent disability.  All PTs must receive a graduate degree from an accredited physical therapist program before taking the national licensure examination that allows them to practice.  – www.apta.org

Physical Therapy Assistant (PTA)
Physical therapy assistants must complete a 2 year associates degree and pass a board licensure exam that is required in most states.  Once a paitent has been evaluated and assessed, PTAs follow the plan of care developed by the physical therapist.  Care provided by a PTA may include teaching clients exercises for mobility, strength, proprioception, and coordination.  The use of physical agents such as electrical stimulation and ultrasound may also be used.  PTAs help people of all ages who have injuries or other health related conditions that limit their ability to move and perform functional activities in their daily lives.  PTAs work in a variety of settings including hospitals, private practices, outpatient clinics, home health, nursing homes, schools, sports facilities, and more.
